MACBETH, LONG ANSWERS

8. What news did the messenger bring Macbeth about Birnam wood? How did Macbeth react to it? Was Birnam wood really moving? Why did Macbeth lose his confidence? What realization did Macbeth have while fighting with Macduff? Why did he rather prefer to be killed than to be imprisoned? How was he finally killed?

A messenger, pale and shaking with fear came to Macbeth and reported that he had just noticed Birnam woods to be moving.

At this, Macbeth roared in anger and called him a liar. He warned the messenger that if it came out false, he would hang him alive. But he himself began to doubt the prophesy of the witches that he would never be vanquished until Birnam woods advanced towards Dunsinane. However he decided that they should put on their armour and go out to Battle.

Soon it was clear how the woods had appeared to be moving. Malcolm had instructed his soldier to cut down a bough each and carry it in front of them so that he could conceal the actual number of invaders from Macbeth. It had thus appeared from a distance like moving woods.

The words of the spirits thus came to pass and Macbeth understood the clear indication of his doom. So he lost his confidence.

A fierce battle ensued. Macbeth slaughtered all those who challenged him and finally he faced Macduff. Macduff was determined to avenge the brutal murder of his wife and innocent children. Macbeth proclaimed that Macduff could never kill him because he bore a charmed life that he could never be killed by a man born naturally of a woman’s womb. Macduff snubbed him and declared that he was never born of woman in the usual way but by surgery, he was taken out into this world. At this, Macbeth lost his strength and resoluteness. He realized that a man should never believe the lying equivocations of witches and juggling spirits. They deceive men into punning words.

As Macbeth refused to fight, Macduff scornfully told him that they would imprison him and demonstrate him to the people as a tyrant. Macbeth replied that he would never live to be humiliated. He drew his courage and started to fight with Macduff.

A terrible battle took place and Macduff finally overpowered Macbeth. He cut his head and presented it to Malcolm, the new king of Scotland.

Summary of the poem Asleep in the Valley Written by Arthur Rimbaud for class twelve/ xii /12, West Bengal board, W.B.H.S.C.

Asleep in the valley Arthur Rimbaud Summary The poem “Asleep in the valley” by Arthur Rimbaud depicts the picture of a young soldier lying blissfully asleep amidst the serenity of a small green valley. A slow stream is flowing through it and leaves long strands of silver on the bright grass. Sun rays come streaming down on the valley from the mountain top. The soldier is lying asleep with his mouth open. He has a pillow made of fern beneath his head and the dense undergrowth as his bed. Soaked with sun rays the pale green bed feels warm. He sleeps with his feet among the flowers and a smile on his face like an infant. His smile is gentle and has no guile in it. The poet asks the nature to keep the young soldier warm because he is afraid that he may catch cold in the open air. His rest should not get disturbed by the humming insects. The young Soldier is asleep at peace in the sunlight with one hand on his breast. But two red holes are seen on one side of his body. They are...
