MACBETH, LONG ANSWERS

5. Why did Macbeth visit the heath once more? What did he see there? What did the witches say to Macbeth and what did Macbeth asked them about Macduff? What happened when Macbeth asked them about Banquo?

The assassins appointed by Macbeth killed Banquo but his son Fleance somehow escaped. Now Macbeth and his wife found no peace thinking that Fleance would be the father to a line of kings in Scotland. So Macbeth decided to visit the heath once more in search of the three weird sisters to know his final outcome.

Macbeth reached a cave near the heath where some witches were engaged in preparing their charms. In a huge cauldron, they were boiling a number of awful things like toads, bats, serpents, the eye of a newt and so many others. [Book]

Macbeth boldly demanded them to call the three witches. The three witches then appeared one by one. The first spirit cautioned Macbeth of the thane of Fife. The second told him that no man born naturally of a woman’s womb could hurt him. Macbeth asked why he should then fear Macduff, the thane of Fife. However, the third spirit told Macbeth that he would never be vanquished until Birnam wood came to Dunsinane Hill.

Macbeth was quite pleased at heart, yet he asked them if Banquo’s issue would ever reign in that kingdom. The big cauldron suddenly sank into the ground and Macbeth saw eight shadows like kings, all smeared with blood passing by him. Banquo was the last figure who was carrying a mirror that showed the figures of many more kings. Macbeth realized that they were the posterity of Banquo who would reign after him in Scotland. The three witches then vanished in the air leaving Macbeth’s last question unanswered.

Summary of the poem Asleep in the Valley Written by Arthur Rimbaud for class twelve/ xii /12, West Bengal board, W.B.H.S.C.

Asleep in the valley Arthur Rimbaud Summary The poem “Asleep in the valley” by Arthur Rimbaud depicts the picture of a young soldier lying blissfully asleep amidst the serenity of a small green valley. A slow stream is flowing through it and leaves long strands of silver on the bright grass. Sun rays come streaming down on the valley from the mountain top. The soldier is lying asleep with his mouth open. He has a pillow made of fern beneath his head and the dense undergrowth as his bed. Soaked with sun rays the pale green bed feels warm. He sleeps with his feet among the flowers and a smile on his face like an infant. His smile is gentle and has no guile in it. The poet asks the nature to keep the young soldier warm because he is afraid that he may catch cold in the open air. His rest should not get disturbed by the humming insects. The young Soldier is asleep at peace in the sunlight with one hand on his breast. But two red holes are seen on one side of his body. They are...
